15 Park Terrace

One of an early group of three houses prominently positioned at high level adjacent to Park Tunnel. By P.F. Robinson architect, c1832, for the 4th Duke of Newcastle and part of an early scheme to develop the Castle Park. Listed Grade II. In single household use. Italianate style. Two and three storeys plus two storey 20c hipped roof extension facing the garden. Painted stucco facades, including string courses, cornices and pilasters with prominent storey height splayed stone plinth and quoins. Irregular combination of hipped slate roofs and flat roofs with parapets. Plain dentil brackets to overhanging eaves on main roof. Main front faces garden overlooking The Park and forms square wing flanking recessed centre bay (No.16). Windows mainly glazing bar sashes, some with moulded surrounds. Semicircular arched head to glazing bar sash window on front facade with moulded surround and keystone. Wrought iron guard added to round arched window. A number of window alterations and additions. House entry at Park Terrace level through rendered square porch with moulded head details plus corner pier with pyramidal cap. Panelled main entrance door. To right of main entrance door, scroll topped wrought iron railing and gate access to lower ground yard area. Railing flanked by rendered square piers with pyramidal caps. Large chimney stack with multiple flues now partly obscured by abutment of second floor extension added to No.16. Flues and caps, originally exposed brickwork, have now been rendered. Original chimney pots removed. Interesting terraced garden spaces overlooking The Park, formed by exploiting steep slope with substantial stone and brick garden and retaining walls linked by series of steps. Substantial but semi-derelict, summer house (pre1881) in lower garden terrace area.
