32a The Ropewalk

One of a pair of houses c1831-34. Now converted into offices. Part of a group of houses on The Ropewalk which were amongst the first to be built in The Park c1828-34. Formerly gardens, the site had prominent views over Nottingham Terrace, (now named Park Terrace) and across The Park. The 4th Duke of Newcastle had grand aesthetic aspirations for a select ‘residential plan’ in The Park and by identifying these plots and commencing building work he aggravated local feelings concerned at impending loss of The Park as an area of common recreational use. Grade II Listed. Three storeys plus basement. Alterations and additions mid 19c and 20c. Stucco with concrete tile roofs, coped gables and central ridge stack. Rusticated ground floor on garden front with ground floor sill band, eaves cornice and blocking course. Windows mainly original glazing bar sashes with bracketed cornices to first floor and moulded surrounds above. Four window range. Symmetrical garden front to Park Terrace with main block flanked by side entrance bay. In the centre, bow window, three storeys, two sashes each. Set back entrance bay has shaped blocking course. Ground floor has slightly projecting cross-framed glazed door and above, single window on each floor. Rear elevation to The Ropewalk has full height 19c and 20c extensions with glazing bar sashes, moulded surrounds, eaves cornice and blocking course to earlier addition. Rear wing, mid 19c, two storeys, single bay, with sill band, cornice and parapet, plus canted oriel window, with four sashes on shaped brackets. Rendered boundary wall to former garden area adjacent to Park Terrace with vehicular access to car parking in former garden area.
