10 Western Terrace

One of a group of four early houses linked in pairs, c1840 possibly by architect T.C. Hine. Houses completed a few years before Hine was appointed Surveyor to Newcastle Estate by 5th Duke of Newcastle and proceeded to prepare road plan of The Park c1855-56 which, apart from minor variations, survives to this day. Grade II Listed. Regency Classic style. Now converted into flats. Three storeys with garrets. Originally, main house and garden with side bay and rear wing enclosing entrance courtyard. Part of lower garden area now separately developed c1970 for garaging with loss of original brick boundary wall and gated entrance from Pelham Crescent. Painted stucco with stucco dressings. Gabled and hipped slate roofs with 2no. central chimney stacks. Stacks now partly altered. Banded rustication to stucco on lower storey of main front overlooking garden with first floor sill band, eaves cornice and blocking course. Upper floors on main front divided into recessed panels by giant pilasters. Pair of window openings to each floor on main front. Glazing bar sash plus replaced window on ground floor, glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds and cornices to first floor and 2no. smaller glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds above. Pedimented gable with glazing bar sash to garret. Plain stucco road front and rear wing with altered eaves cornice and blocking course. Mainly glazing bar sash windows with plain reveals to openings plus a number of alterations and additions. New main entrance doorway formed in rear wing. Alterations to original separating wall in courtyard and boundary wall to Western Terrace.
