33 Cavendish Road East

Large detached house by architects Stockdale Harrison & Sons for J. Woodward 1898. Formerly known as ‘Redcliffe House’. Now converted into flats c1975. One flat occupied by architect Robert Cullen. Two storeys plus basement and attic storey with single storey rear wing and outbuildings. Red brick facades with canted and polygonal window bays, timber framework at attic level, ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled plain tile roof. Domestic Revival style. Flat roofed glazed porch and fire escape staircase added on garden side adjacent to polygonal window bay plus gabled brick extension to original single storey hipped roof rear wing. Outbuilding known as ‘The Coach House’ probably built as a garage c1909 by same architect, Stockdale Harrison & Sons. Now converted into separate dwelling. Substantial part of lower garden area adjacent to Tattershall Drive now separately developed into four dwellings c1977-79. Residual garden area to original house now subdivided to create separate garden areas for flats. Blue brick band courses on facades w ith half-round and segmental brick arched heads to a number of window openings. Moulded brick pilasters to rear wing. Stonework features include moulded surrounds to ground floor window bays and round arched main entrance doorway, facade banding, window sills and datestone panel mounted on road front. Irregular main roof form with prominent half-timbered gables plus hips, octagonal spire above polygonal bay and dormer windows. Hipped roof on garden front with lead covered ridge vent. Recently reroofed with red plain tiles, bonnet hip tiles and clay ridge tiles. Iron finial to octagonal spire. Timber framed gables with overhanging decorated bargeboards. Jettied gable over canted bay on road front with large moulded wood brackets. Prominent modillion brackets to overhanging wood eaves. Red brick chimney stacks with moulded brick string courses, brick arched panels, splay bricks and stone dressings. Some original rainwater fittings have been replaced. Mainly sash windows, a number with glazing bars. Also casements, mainly at attic storey level plus leaded lights, including decorative Art Nouveau styling. Glazed and panelled main entrance door. Original brick boundary wall on road front with red brick plinth, square pillars and stone dressings. Only wrought iron posts of original railing between brick pillars now survive.
