Cavendish House: Cavendish Road East
Large detached house c1890-95. One of a group of similarly styled houses including ‘Overdale’ and ‘Elmhurst’. Judges’ residence. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with stone dressings and gabled slate roof with dormers. Two storey brick extension added to rear wing adjacent to road front c1939. Pair of window bays overlooking garden. Canted left hand bay with hipped slate roof at attic level and rectangular right hand bay with gabled dormer above. Stepped gabled wing on road front with flat roofed rectangular window bay set at angle to side of main building. Decorative brick details to verges, eaves and string courses with corbelling, mouldings, dentillation and patterning. Also, moulded brick surrounds to some window openings. Stone door and window surrounds with chamfered reveals and moulding details. Stone surround to Venetian window opening at attic level on rectangular bay overlooking garden. Large stone framed and mullioned window on north facing facade. Slate roof with clay ridge tiles, finials and prominent gables and dormers. Lead hips to roof of canted window bay. Red brick chimney stacks with brick relief patterning, corbelled caps and buff crown pots. Roof windows added. Sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. Red brick boundary wall to Cavendish Road East with inset panels, saddleback copings and gated openings with red brick piers, moulded brick and stone caps and stone plinths. Lantern over gated opening to main entrance. Large conservatory adjacent to house overlooking garden. Steps from garden to gated opening on Holles Crescent. Original boundary wall to Holles Crescent with coursed rubble stone plinth as retaining wall and red brick garden wall above. Opening in stone wall to former carriage house, with arched head and flanked by stone piers, now used as a garage. Later adjacent opening also used as a garage.
