4 Fish Pond Drive

One of a pair of houses c1888-90 possibly for Frederick Messom. Now converted into flats. Probably built as a group with houses of similar style on Hope Drive (12-26). Area had been previously used, since the beginning of the 19c, as garden allotments known as Fishpond Gardens. Three storeys including attic space with three storey canted bay and two storey box bay either side of recessed main entrance porch on front facade. No significant extensions to original building. Red brick facades with corbelled brick / terracotta detailing at eaves and gable verges plus brick ovolo mouldings to window reveals. Decorative brick / terracotta band course at first floor level with recessed brick panels under sills on window bays. Decorative brick / terracotta motif above window lintel on gable dormer. Lancet arched head to main entrance porch with brick voussoirs and hoodmould. Stone lintels and sills to main window openings plus keystone and imposts to arched opening over entrance porch. The stonework has now been painted. Saddleback roof with hipped gable, hipped roofs to bays plus gabled dormer. Originally, clay plain tiles with decorative, perforated ridge tiles, (see 12 Hope Drive), now replaced. Brick chimney stacks with single string course and red and blue brick caps. A number of the original buff ‘crown’ pots survive. Alterations to caps of gable stacks including removal of some pots. Sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. Casement windows to second floor of canted bay. Original panelled and partly glazed main entrance door. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further downpipes, waste pipes and hopper heads added. Small front and rear garden areas. Rebuilt low brick boundary wall and gate piers adjacent to Fish Pond Drive and Hope Drive.
