18 Barrack Lane
One of a pair of houses c1900. Barrack Lane, previously named Barrack Road, formed main access to Army Barracks in The Park from Derby Road. Barracks, built c1793 demolished c1870, replaced by sections of new estate roads Pelham Crescent and Cavendish Crescent North. Site of houses on Barrack Lane previously used as allotment/gardens. Red brick with stone dressings and gabled plain tile roof. Two storeys plus attic and basement. Now converted into flats. Two storey hipped roof wing on road front with alterations and additions to previous single storey lean-to extension. Part of lower garden area adjacent to Harlaxton Drive now separately developed with house and garage c1970 replacing original stone boundary wall. Plain and glazing bar sash windows on road and side elevations. Stone lintels and sills to original window openings with moulded brick reveals. Full height rectangular window bay on garden front with plain sash windows. Moulded stone surrounds to bay windows. Stonework now painted. Railings added to roof of bay with access from altered dormer window at attic level. Moulded brick detail at main gutter level and to head of bay. Gabled dormer window above each bay on garden front with half-timbered framework and bargeboards. Decorative ridge tiles. Later flat roofed dormer window to roof at gutter level on road front. Red brick chimney stacks with corbel and string course detail. Single flue stack above front wing now altered. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Steeply sloping site with garden at basement level adjacent to house. Original coursed rubble stone boundary wall and gate piers adjacent to Barrack Lane.
