1 Hamilton Drive

One of a pair of semi-detached houses (1 and 1a), c1886 -1890, possibly built as a group with similar houses at 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 Peveril Drive and ‘Ferndene’, Hamilton Drive. Area previously used for garden allotments, known as Fishpond Gardens, since beginning of 19c. In single household use. Three storeys including attic space plus basement with two storey canted bay on front facade, three storey canted bay on side facade and two storey rear wing. Steel fire escape ladder attached to side bay. Originally, outbuilding / privy in back garden area. Red brick facades with string course and projecting brick headers at first floor storey height level and at second floor window sill level to canted bay. Stepped brickwork detail at verges on front facade gable with chevron patterned decorative brickwork in framed panels at second floor level on side bay. Chamfered brick reveals to some window openings. Parts of brick facades, particularly to rear wing, now painted white. Brick segmental arched openings over rear windows. Stone dressings to main door and window apertures with a number of complete stone surrounds, including Tudor arched head with openings to main entrance doorway, otherwise mainly chamfered lintels and sills. Stonework now painted. Steeply pitched saddleback roof with hipped roofs to bays and rear wing. Clay plain tiles with bonnet hip tiles and ornamental, perforated clay ridge tiles and finials. Painted, projecting wooden eaves with bargeboards at gable. Original rainwater fittings have been replaced. Prominent brick chimney stacks with string courses, corbelled caps and buff, louvred chimney pots. Some pots missing or have been replaced. Original casement windows on main facades with single transoms and mainly single mullions. Also, sash windows at rear. Apart from white painted brick facades at rear, no other significant external alterations or extensions. Brick boundary wall to Hamilton drive with saddleback copings and stone capped brick piers. Openings enlarged in boundary wall to allow off street car parking in part of former front garden area.
