24 Hamilton Drive

Semi-detached house (adjacent to 8 Peveril Drive) on a prominent corner plot at the junction of Hamilton Drive and Peveril Drive. Built c1890 on an area previously used as garden allotments known as Fishpond Gardens. Part of a group of similarly styled late Victorian villas also including 8, 10, 12 and ‘Parkdale’ on Peveril Drive. Now converted into three flats. Three storeys above ground including attic storey plus two storey original rear extension and lean-to. Red brick facades with a paler brick used on the two storey extension. Render has been added to the base of the rear extension. Stone lintels, sills and surrounds to original door and window openings now painted over. Brick / terracotta string courses at storey height levels with corbelled brick eaves at rear. Single storey flat roofed, rectangular and canted brick window bays either side of main entrance doorway with stone lintels, shaft mullions and sills. Gabled roof with clay plain tiles and decorative perforated clay ridge tiles. Prominent painted barge boards at gables with corbelled raking brick cornice to gable verges on rear extension. Simple projecting timber eaves to main house. Prominent brick chimney stacks with brick relief patterning and corbelled capping. Some original chimney pots have been replaced. Original rainwater fittings have been replaced with plastic. Predominantly sash windows with some original casements on front bay and attic windows. Original door opening in rear extension now partially bricked up to form window. Roof window added. Canopy over main entrance door. Part of the original brick boundary wall has been removed to create access to a car parking area replacing the rear garden. The surviving original brick boundary wall and gate piers adjacent to Hamilton Drive and Peveril Drive have been rendered. Although there have been some alterations, the main body of the house remains mainly intact and there have been no extensions to the original building. The setting of the house has been compromised by the inappropriate and unsightly rendering of the original brick boundary walls adjacent to the roads, creating a visually disturbing element on thestreetscene. The brick garden walls at the rear of the building appear to be original and a fence forms the front garden boundary with 8 Peveril Drive.
