Weston Lodge: Hardwick Road
Detached, mainly single storey house built 1889 on triangular plot enclosed by Lenton Road, Fiennes Crescent and Hardwick Road. In single household use. Plans by Tom Loach for additions to house for W. Edgar c1905 probably included single storey extension to east facade, plus gablet adjacent to main entrance doorway. Alterations to the original verandah area on the main south facade, including glazed infill screen, may also have occurred at this time. A number of significant additions c1995-2005 including large gabled double garage building and single storey games/garden room abutting enlarged former stable and carriage house. Part of eastern end of garden has been developed to form separate dwelling. Conservatory originally abutted west facing elevation. Red brick facades with ashlar dressings. Prominent features include pair of Flemish gable wings on south facade, flanking former recessed open verandah/balcony area; main entrance doorway with moulded brick surround and semicircular arched head plus adjacent brick oriel window on stone bracket. Other original brick and terracotta features include moulded eaves detail, string courses, segmental arched heads to openings, undersill brackets and aprons plus plinth stretchers. Unpainted original stone details include stone copings to gables, moulded sills to a number of window openings plus step to main entrance door. Gabled and hipped roof. Existing slates probably replaced original plain tiles. Partially rebuilt red brick chimney stacks with panels, brick reliefs, moulded brick string course and corbelled head. Buff ‘crown’ chimney pots. Generally double hung sash windows with small pane glazing bars in upper sash. Casements with leaded lights to flat roofed window bay at corner of later extension plus screen infill to former verandah area. A number of bulls eye and other decorative small windows. Panelled and half glazed double door to main entrance with semicircular head. Some recent alterations and additions to windows and doors. Original garden area enclosed by brick boundary wall now increased in height in some areas. Original drive and gated entrances on Lenton Road now bricked up and new wide vehicular entrance with piers recently formed on Hardwick Road.
