22 Barrack Lane

One of a pair of houses c1905. Barrack Lane, previously named Barrack Road, formed main access to Army Barracks in The Park from Derby Road. Barracks, built c1793 demolished c1870, replaced by sections of new estate roads Pelham Crescent and Cavendish Crescent North. Site of house and other houses on Barrack Lane previously used as allotment gardens. Two storeys plus attic and basement. Red brick with hipped plain tile roof. House converted into flats. Original single storey, gabled extension on road front with later flat roofed garage building adjacent to Barrack Lane boundary. Single storey canted window bay on road front with brick plinth and hipped plain tile roof. Lightwell with railings to later basement window. Moulded wooden eaves cornices, brackets and head panel to bay. Original timber frame and sash windows to bay now replaced by plastic casements. 4no. window openings at first floor level on road front with segmental brick arched heads, splay reveals and stepped plinth brick sills. Original sash windows with plain lower sashes and glazing bar upper sashes replaced with plastic casements. Similar treatment to openings on side elevation. Original full height rectangular window bay on garden front now substantially altered. Although moulded timber heads with bracketed cornices survive original sash windows replaced with plastic components. Railings added to flat roof of bay with access from dormer window above. Original door openings to balconies. Glazed lean-to entrance porch at side of building. Steps lead down from side of building on steeply sloping site to garden at basement level. Garden continues to slope down to stone boundary wall on Harlaxton Drive. Hipped plain tile roof with bonnet and decorative ridge tiles. Pitched roof dormer windows, now altered, with tile hanging and bargeboards on road and garden fronts. Only a small section of original coursed rubble stone boundary wall to Barrack Lane survives. Other sections lost during construction of garage and enlarged openings for car parking access.
