The Chestnuts: 5 Kenilworth Road

Detached house c1865-70, possibly by architects Hine & Evans. Now converted into flats. Red brick with ashlar dressings and slate hipped roof. Three storeys plus attic storey. Sloping site with entrance at Kenilworth Road level and lower ground floor/basement at garden level. Original lower garden area adjacent to Hamilton Drive now developed for separate residential use. Original outbuildings on either side of main house now extended, altered and converted for garage and separate residential use, including removal of large glasshouse which originally abutted east facing facade. Round arched main entrance doorway on road front. To right, large stone framed staircase/hall window opening with gabled dormer window above. Pair of three storey canted window bays on garden front flanking central doorway. Single window openings generally. Decorative brick banding at eaves level with string courses and square inset panels. Also, brick shafts to window reveals and bullnose detail at eaves and gable verges. Stonework features include moulded surrounds to door and window openings on road front, including tracery foil details to staircase/hall window and pointed arched window in gabled dormer, plus separate lintels and sills with moulded details to a number of single window openings. Stone head and sill bands to window openings at each storey level on garden front. Also, stone copings to gables and chimney stacks. Hipped slate roof with gables/gabled dormers. A number of flat roofed dormer windows added. Prominent ridge and side wall red brick chimney stacks with string courses, corbelled caps and buff crown chimney pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Gutter brackets. Combination of plain and glazing bar sash windows with a number of replacements and additions. Leaded lights to large staircase/hall window on road front. Panelled double leaf main entrance door with round arched head. Half glazed panelled door on garden front. Original boundary wall and gate piers on road front with coursed rubble stone plinth, red brick wall with piers, brackets and blue brick banding plus saddleback copings. Brick retaining walls, including round arched openings at main level changes in garden.
