1 Lenton Avenue

Detached house c1870-75, also named Glenelg. In single household use. Two storeys plus basement. Red brick with stone dressings and hipped slate roof. Substantial part of original garden area to side of original house and adjacent to Hardwick Road lost to separate residential development c1970. Plan by Swan and Wright for conversion of stables to garage for Godfrey Gadd c1930. (Stables/garage building located on opposite side of Lenton Avenue, now demolished and replaced with terraced residential development c1970). Also, plan for alterations for Denis Greensmith c1960. Original house substantially enlarged with two storey brick and hipped slate roof addition to north facing facade plus single storey, flat roofed extension adjacent to Lenton Road. Two storey canted and rectangular window bays on main front overlooking garden. Decorative brick detail at eaves with shaped brackets and inset blue brick panels. Also bands of alternating blue brick stretchers on facades with red and blue brick voussoirs to decorative arches over some window openings. Stone surrounds to a number of window openings plus head and sill bands on bays. Elsewhere, chamfered stone lintels and sills to other openings. Stonework now painted. Slate hipped roof with clay hip and ridge tiles and overhanging eaves. Lead hips to slate roofs over bay windows. Alterations to original red brick chimney stack. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Sash windows generally, many with glazing bars. Some original openings removed or altered during alteration and extension work. New openings added. Original red brick boundary wall with plinth, piers and saddleback copings, now partly altered, rebuilt or removed during later alterations and additions. House name inscribed in stone cap to gate pier on Lenton Road.
