3 Lenton Avenue

Detached two storey house with cellars c1865-75. Originally red brick with hipped slate roof similar to adjacent house at No.5 Lenton Avenue. Now all facades have been rendered and painted. In single household use. House and garden originally occupied full plot between Lenton Avenue and Hardwick Road. Substantial part of garden adjacent to Hardwick Road developed for separate residential use c1965. Gated opening on Hardwick Road originally provided access to main entrance to house facing garden. Late 20c single and two storey additions, extending to Lenton Avenue boundary. These later buildings replaced large original conservatory and other smaller outbuildings. Pair of single storey, flat roofed canted window bays facing garden, flanking central round arched doorway, formerly used as main entrance. Original single storey flat roofed brick entrance porch facing road, now altered and rendered. Originally, red brick facades with ashlar dressings, now completely obscured by render and paint. Original brick details beneath render and paint include ornamental brackets and tiled frieze at eaves level plus moulded voussoirs to garden facing doorway. Stone surrounds to original door and window openings with chamfered reveals, cornices and various moulding details. Stone mullions to original window pairs at first floor level plus floral capped stone pilasters to original door to garden with hoodmoulding and keystone. Stone lintels and sills to original window openings. All surviving stonework now rendered or painted. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge and hip tiles. Two pairs of side wall chimney stacks. Original caps to stacks and pots altered or taken down. Originally, mainly plain sash windows, but some with glazing bars including round arched opening to staircase window facing Lenton Avenue. Originally, red brick boundary wall to Lenton Avenue, now altered and rendered. Originally, mews on opposite side of Lenton Avenue, possibly associated with house. Mews demolished and replaced with terraced residential development c1970-80.
