5 Lenton Avenue

Detached two storey house with cellars c1865-75. Red brick with hipped slate roof. In single household use. House and garden originally occupied full plot between Lenton Avenue and Hardwick Road. Substantial part of garden adjacent to Hardwick Road developed for separate residential use c1965-70. Original main entrance to house was from gated access on Hardwick Road. A number of later side extensions and additions including part pitched and part flat roofed garage/storage buildings c1955-65. Later building adjacent to south facade replaced large original conservatory. Pair of single storey, flat roofed canted window bays facing garden, flanking central round arched former main entrance doorway. Original single storey flat roofed brick entrance porch facing road, now altered and extended with glazed passageway. A number of window opening alterations on road front c1950-60, including ground floor pair either side of porch and to first floor staircase, replacing original round arched sash window. Plain sash window in one canted bay replaced with door and steps leading to garden c1970-80. Red brick facades with ashlar dressings. Brick details include ornamental brackets and tiled frieze at eaves level plus moulded voussoirs to garden doorway. Stone surrounds to original door and window openings with chamfered reveals, cornices and various moulding details. Stone mullions to original window pairs at first floor level above canted bays plus floral capped stone pilasters to original garden doorway with hoodmoulding and keystone. Stone lintels and sills to surviving original window openings on other facades. Stonework now painted. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge and hip tiles. Two pairs of side wall chimney stacks. One stack reduced in height and caps on other stacks have been altered. C.i. rainwater fittings. Original sash windows, mostly plain but some with glazing bars. A number of window alterations. Original pair of shaped, half–glazed panelled doors to entrance from garden. Original doorway to porch facing road replaced. Red brick boundary wall to Lenton Avenue with brick saddleback copings. Originally, mews on opposite side of Lenton Avenue, possibly associated with house. Mews demolished and replaced with terraced residential development c1970-80.
