9 Lenton Avenue

Detached house 1870-75, possibly by architect T.C.Hine. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with stone dressings and half-hipped slate roof. Large part of original garden area adjacent to Hardwick Road separately developed to create single dwelling c1980. Plans by W.D. Sterland for alterations to house c1959. Two storey brick extension with hipped roof added to road frontage. Steel fire escape platform and staircase from upper flat. Prominent pair of canted window bays with hipped roofs on main front overlooking garden, flanking former main entrance doorway. Flat roofed entrance porch on road front, now altered and rendered. Corbelled brick detail with dentillation at eaves and gable verges. Bull nosed brick detail to gabled dormer verges and heads of canted window bays. Semicircular arched heads to gable windows with brick voussoirs. Inset, decorative buff brick band at eaves level on garden front. Moulded stone surrounds to windows and pointed arch main entrance doorway in central bay on garden front. Elsewhere, chamfered and shaped stone lintels and sills to window openings plus moulded, semicircular arched heads and sill bands to gable windows at attic level. Stonework now painted. Slate half-hipped roof with a number of later roof windows. Gabled dormer to central bay on garden front. Ridges of hipped roofs to bay dormers originally fitted with iron cresting. Red brick side wall chimney stacks with brick relief banding and crown chimney pots. Original rainwater fittings now replaced and further pipework added. Sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. A number of alterations. Red brick boundary wall with half round copings to Lenton Avenue and central gated opening with square brick piers and later caps. Part of original brick boundary wall adjacent to Hardwick Road removed to provide access to residential development in lower garden area of original house.
