17 Lenton Avenue

Detached house c1885, possibly by Hine & Son architects. Also known as Dundee House. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with stone dressings and slate gabled roof. Single storey outbuilding, used as double garage, added late 20c replacing small original outbuilding adjacent to garden wall boundary with No.15. Single storey bow and rectangular window bays adjacent to main entrance doorway plus single storey canted and rectangular window bays on other facades. Plain Lenton Avenue facade compared to more exuberant entrance and garden facing facades. Variety of decorative and moulded brick and terracotta detail to gable pediments, eaves, string courses, band courses, voussoirs and to door and window surrounds including a number with pediments and segmental pediments. Also decorative festoon panel reliefs plus circular air vents in gables. Stonework details predominantly on main entrance bay with moulded door and window surrounds, brackets and caps. Semicircular moulded stone arched heads to openings, some with pediments over. Later flat roofed canopy on shaped brackets to main entrance doorway. Also stone sills and sill bands generally. Stone features now painted. Irregular roof with prominent gables, particularly double gable on main front overlooking garden. Lead valleys and decorative clay ridge tiles. Red brick chimney stacks, originally with string courses and corbelled heads. Some stacks altered and original pots replaced. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Combination of sash and casement windows. Sashes mainly at attic and ground storey levels with cross window casements at first floor level, some with glazing bars. Panelled external doors with overlights. House prominently positioned at junction of Lenton Avenue and Maxtoke Road with original brick boundary wall. Coursed rubble stone plinth to sections of wall. Square brick gate piers with stone caps. Upper part of stepped boundary wall rebuilt or raised with original saddleback brick copings reinstated.
