23 Lenton Avenue

Part three storey, part two storey detached house and garden occupying plot between Lenton Avenue and Cavendish Road West, c1870. Small flat roofed, single storey extension adjacent to main entrance bay on side facade. Previous occupants include local architects Rex Savidge and Bill Crampin. Savidge carried out internal alterations plus a small side extension adjacent to carport. Large carport replaced small original outbuilding adjacent to Lenton Avenue boundary wall. Crampin added glazed single storey, canted bay facing garden and remodelled garden to reduce previous difference in levels. In single household use. Red brick facades with stone dressings. Two storey canted window bay with flat roof facing garden. Prominent gables on all facades with gabled dormer facing garden. Brick details include lancet arched window openings and double string course on front facade, hoodmoulding over windows on side gable and bull nose brick detail at eaves and gable verges. Sections of brickwork at base of facades and in carport has been rendered / painted. Stone dressings to openings generally, including full surrounds to a number of windows and main entrance doorway. Elsewhere, stone lintels and sills to brickwork openings. Stonework now painted. Complex roof form with intersecting double pitches and hips at various levels creating gables on all facades. Slate with red clay decorative ridge tiles and lead valleys and flashings. Red brick chimney stack with string course and corbelled head capping. ‘Crown’ chimney pots. Roof window added. Sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. Some alteration and additions to openings including replacement of original back entrance doorway in front yard area with a window. Original boundary wall and gate piers to Lenton Avenue with stone plinth, blue brick plinth stretchers and red brick wall and copings. Part of front wall taken down or altered to provide opening and enclosure for car port. Original brick boundary wall and gate piers to Cavendish Road West. Apart from some additions and alterations, original house and garden remains substantially intact. House also makes prominent impact when viewed from Cavendish Road West.
