1 Lenton Road (6 and 6a Castle Grove)

Built c1856-58, Grade II Listed. By architect T.C. Hine, Surveyor of the Duke of Newcastle’s Estate, and responsible for road layout of The Park c1855-56 that remains predominantly intact. House together with houses on Castle Grove and Lenton Road are amongst the earliest in The Park. Three storeys including attic storey plus extensive basement. Now converted into two flats. Red brick facades with inset decorative buff brick / stone panels at eaves level and at head of canted window bay. Single storey canted window bay on road front with three storey shallow rectangular bay on rear facade terminating at roof level with gabled dormer. Bull nose brick detail at roof verges to gabled dormer. Stone capped plinth on rear facade with blue brick string course. Part of brickwork on front facade has been rendered / painted. Moulded stone surrounds to doors and windows with moulded stone eaves plus string course below inset buff panels. Stone or render surround to attic window in gabled dormer now removed. Prominent open-bed moulded pediment to gable on front facade. Stone balustrading to plinth wall flanking canted window bay at ground floor level. Gabled and hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles plus lead valleys and flashings to hips, hipped dormers and gabled pediment. Brick chimney stacks with brick and stone plinth, stone string courses plus corbelled brick and stone capping. One of the chimney stacks has been altered. Original buff crown chimney pots. Original c.i. rainwater fittings replaced and waste pipes added. Sash windows with glazing bars, generally. Panelled main entrance door to Lenton Road. Part of the first floor window opening facing Castle Grove has been altered to form new entrance doorway to top flat. Extension c1970 to 7 Castle Grove abuts building. Altered glazed passageway over side entrance from Castle Grove. Later outbuildings altered and converted into garages for Nos. 6 and 7 Castle Grove. Substantial part of original back garden area separated to form garden area for 7 Castle Grove. Original railings adjacent to cellar access steps on Lenton Road.
