4 Lenton Road

Part of a group of similarly styled houses on triangular plot of land enclosed by Lenton Road, Park Drive and Holles Crescent. Built c1865-70, possibly by John Loverseed with Architects Hine & Evans. One of a pair of houses (with 6 Lenton Road). House now converted into flats. Three storeys plus basement/cellars. Later garage building now removed to create access to car parking space in original garden/yard area. Red brick facades with stone dressings. Decorative features include buff brick string courses and band courses of small, recessed rectangular buff brick panels. Red and buff brick cruciform patterns to bay parapet and bull nose brick detail at eaves and gable verges. Two storey canted window bay on front facade and shallow single storey box bay at main entrance doorway. Parts of plinths to facades have been rendered/painted. Combination of openings, some with segmental or semicircular arched heads. Stone surrounds to original door and windows. Stonework generally plain with splay detail at reveals and lintels, mouldings added to cornice detail on bays and to drip mould above large mullioned window at ground floor level on front facade. Stonework now painted. Double pitched slate roof with gables. Clay ridge tiles and lead valleys. Flat roof dormer at rear. Roof windows added. Original red brick chimney stacks with stone plinth stretchers, buff brick patterning, corbelled brick heads and stone caps. A number of the original buff ‘crown’ chimney pots have been replaced. Original c.i. rainwater fittings have been replaced. Sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. Original brick and stone boundary wall to Lenton Road, now partly rendered. Original brick garden walls adjacent to 2 Lenton Road and 3 Park Drive. Original gate opening with piers and steps now enlarged to provide car access into former garden area, including tarmac drive and brick retaining walls. Front garden area originally shared with No.6 Lenton Road.
