Castle Bank: 5 Lenton Road

One of architect Watson Fothergill’s earliest houses in The Park c1873. Grade II Listed. Similar in scale and style to the adjacent house (No.7) also by Watson Fothergill. Now converted into two flats. Three storeys including attic plus basement. Large canted three storey bay adjacent to Lenton Road plus two storey flat roofed canted bay on garden front. Red brick facades with extensive brick and stone decorative patterning. Corbelled brick eaves with sawtooth detailing and linear arrangement of inset eight-pointed stars. Numerous blue brick string and flush courses. Brick drip moulds and voussoirs to half round arched head to main gable window plus brick bowtell roll mouldings to a number of window reveals. Elaborate moulded stone door and window dressings with band courses at window head and sill levels. Complex roof with hipped bay, coped gables with kneelers plus gabled dormer. Slate with lead flashings to ridges and valleys. Iron finials. Dual tone linear slate patterning on roof. Some original c.i. rainwater fittings replaced. Prominent tapered brick chimney stacks with extensive brick relief detailing, blue brick string courses plus corbelled and stepped cappings. One chimney stack has been partially rebuilt. Buff ‘louvre’ pots. Sash windows generally. Some minor alterations to windows. Alterations to conservatory and yard entrance wall. Original brick boundary wall and gate piers adjacent to Lenton Road including shaped brick balustrading, blue plinth bricks and stone saddleback copings. Stone caps to main entrance gate piers. Entrance porch and steps added c1898. More recent single storey flat roofed extension in yard. Plans for garage on Ogle Drive 1936. Part of original Lenton Road boundary wall has been rebuilt and altered. Originally, rear garden areas of Nos.5 and 7 were combined into single shared garden.
