17 Lenton Road
Early houses c1856, also known as ‘Oakhurst’ or Oakhyrst’. House located on the site of the Park Bowling Green established c1807, adjacent to a group of garden allotments known as Fish Pond Gardens, dating from 1792-4. In single household use. Two storeys plus basement and attic storey. Single storey later brick and plain tile lean-to extension abuts west facing facade. Additions and alterations for Walter Sisson c1946 possibly also include single storey flat roofed and rendered outbuildings abutting boundary wall to Lenton Road. Records indicate a plan for a garage for Bernard Wright c1956. Coach house and small outbuilding, now semi-derelict, added in garden area adjacent to Clifton Terrace c1900-1914. Red brick facades with unpainted stone dressings including door and window surrounds plus quoins, plinth caps and projecting string course with gargoyle-like carved grotesque heads at corner positions. Pair of columns with foliated capitals form part of stone portico with moulded segmental arched heads at main entrance doorway. Brick canted window bays to principal rooms on garden facing facade. Gabled roof with projecting wood bargeboards and carved finials. Slate roof covering with clay ridge tiles. Original brick chimney stacks with stone quoined plinths, brick string courses, corbelled caps and buff ‘crown’ pots. Cast iron dated hopper heads and shaped ornamental spouts. A number of original rainwater fittings have been replaced. Mainly wood or metal framed windows, some with leaded lights. A number of alterations or replacements to external doors and windows. Large tree lined garden, originally forming part of shared garden with No.15 Lenton Road (the site of the old Park Bowling Green). Original brick boundary wall to Lenton Road has been rendered. Original house and garden remain mainly intact with some alterations and small extensions.
