5 Castle Grove
Built c1856-58 together with a group of houses on Castle Grove by architect T.C Hine. House similar in scale and style to No.4 Castle Grove sharing prominent stepped location. Four storeys including attic storey plus basement. Now converted into two flats. Grade II Listed. Alterations to original entrance / conservatory. Buff brick facades with stone dressings. Originally, pair of shallow three storey rectangular window bays on west facade terminating in shaped gabled dormers. Three storey canted window bay added to west facade, (after 1881). Flat roofed three storey canted window bay on south facade. Access to lower flat through moulded round arched stone doorway into conservatory. Access to upper flat via new opening and balcony platform at first floor level on south facade. Alteration to original opening to form enlarged door access to garden at ground floor level plus new small window openings in parapet. Small areas of brickwork have now been rendered / painted. Moulded stone surrounds to door and windows plus stone string courses, decorative parapet pilasters and copings. Most of stonework now painted. Double hipped slate roof with clay hip tiles and ornamental ridge tiles. Buff brick chimney stacks with stone string courses and moulded caps. A number of original buff ‘crown’ chimney pots replaced or missing. Original rainwater fittings replaced. Original sash windows generally with some replacements and alterations. Prominent brick retaining wall to Castle Grove boundary from garden areas at lower level. Original brick boundary walls adjacent to gardens at Nos. 4 and 7 Castle Grove. Garden area significantly reduced following conversion and extension of former coach house facing Ogle Drive to form separate dwelling.
