25 Lenton Road

One of the early houses in The Park c1858, possibly by Hine & Evans Architects. Although outbuildings have been replaced by a separate single storey dwelling (No.25a) c1960-70, the main building remains relatively intact and in single household use. An original single storey extension to the west facing facade was also demolished some time ago and partly replaced by a small lean-to building together with the refacing of part of the same facade with an additional brick skin involving alterations to openings. Original openings were also infilled during the construction of No. 25a. The main house is two storeys plus basement and attic storey. Red brick facades with moulded stone door and window surrounds, string courses plus cornice detail at eaves level. All the stone dressings below eaves level have now been painted. Render has been added to the brick plinth on the garden elevation. Pair of shallow rectangular full height window bays topped by shaped gable dormers on garden elevation, flanking a central two storey canted door and window bay with flat roof. Two storey projecting wing on Lenton Road elevation. Hipped slate roof with gable dormers. Lead flashings to hips, ridges and valleys. Plain brick chimney stacks with stone dressings and original pots with some replacements. Cast iron rainwater fittings and soil downpipes with some plastic replacements. Prominent moulded semicircular stone arched head to main entrance doorway flanked by shaft pilasters and stone dressings, now partly obscured by later development of No.25a. Plain sash windows generally, some with glazing bars, plus later window openings. Leaded light lattice glazing to some feature windows. Plans for billiard room and garage c1921 by Swann & Wright Architects, probably replaced as part of development of No.25a. A covered passage was added to the building between the main entrance doorway and the boundary wall on Lenton Road c1870, but this has now been demolished together with the boundary wall. Part of the original garden area has been used for garaging (Nos.25 and 25a) plus a drive and these have been separated from the residual garden area by a substantial brick screen wall. An area of land, now isolated from the house by the garages and drive, is also part of the property. The land originally formed part of a group of garden allotments known as Fishpond gardens but is now overgrown.
