Cliff House: Lenton Road (32, 33, 33a, 33b)
Prominent early house by T.C. Hine architect c1857 subsequently extended and more recently converted into accommodation for three separate households in main building c1959 plus two flats in much altered and extended original coach house. Three storeys including attic. Alterations and additions include two large side extensions c1885-95, single storey canted window bay and conservatory at rear, various smaller and more recent extensions plus flat roofed double garage. Red brick facades, buff brick string courses and distinctive Hine decorative features including band of small inset buff brick or stone panels at storey height levels, Italianate splayed corner windows with stone colonnette on main front facade and eight pointed star vent motif. Large west facing later extension, with bow window, similar in style to original house. Prominent east facing extension with relocated main entrance to enlarged house through imposing classical style doorway with stone columns, pilasters and entablature. Brick segmental pediments to first floor windows over entrance and half round arched head with brick voussoirs to dormer window at attic level. Moulded stone door and window surrounds, copings and chimney caps. Most of the stonework now painted. Hipped slate roof with prominent gabled dormer on front facade. Mainly lead flashings to ridges and hips on original house with plain and decorative clay ridges and hips on large extensions. Red brick chimney stacks with buff brick string courses and stone caps plus many original buff crown chimney pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced. Sash window generally with glazing bars and small panes. No glazing bars to sash windows on large extensions. A number of doors and window alterations and additions including roof windows. Original brick and stone boundary wall and piers partly replaced by railings, extensions and garage building. Surviving sections of brick boundary wall have been altered by render and paint. Original garden area largely lost to separate residential development c1980 and residual original garden area now subdivided to suit present occupancy.
