Rock House: 37 Lenton Road.
Built into sloping ground c1870 with, originally, single storey facade to Lenton Road and two storeys facing rear garden area. Located on land immediately adjacent to old Newcastle Bowling Green. (Now Friars Court) Converted into flats and much altered c1968-70 with variety of flat and pitched roof extensions. Single storey pitched roof extension added adjacent to original main entrance doorway facing Lenton Road with large flat roofed extension adding second floor to original two storey side wing. Probably red brick facades with stone dressings originally, now much altered by extensive rendering and painting. Pair of two storey canted window bays on south facing facade. Brick half round arched openings to a number of original door and window openings with cruciform shaped inset brick patterning on facades and bays. Double pitched slate roof to part of original house with gables over the main entrance doorway and above flat roofed canted bays. Original roof over two storey side wing now replaced with flat roofed brick storey height addition. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further downpipes and waste pipes added. Most of the original doors and windows have been replaced. Originally a large house with glasshouses, outbuildings and large stepped south facing garden. Now most of original garden has been lost to separate residential development of four houses c1968 with independent road access (Rock Drive). Block of flat roofed garages also built adjacent to original house on Lenton Road. Little or none of original boundary wall adjacent to Lenton Road remains.
