Gladstone House : Lincoln Circus

Detached house built by Edwin Loverseed for himself 1876. Alterations and additions include, small single storey extension and porch, late 19c/early 20c, plus flat roofed double garage building added in former outbuildings yard area. Coach house and stable buildings converted for residential use together with additional residential development c1965 on adjacent land originally forming part of house garden. Gladstone House now converted into two flats. Red brick with stone dressings and slate gabled roof. Two storeys plus attic and basement. Six panelled main entrance door on road front plus side and overlights with moulded and decorated stone surround and segmental pediment. Sash windows on road front in singles and pairs. A number of sashes have been altered. Moulded stone surrounds to windows with shaft mullions on window pairs. Moulded stone cornice plus string course at first floor level on all facades. Stone band course aligned with window heads at first floor level and repeated on rear garden facing facade. Decorative brickwork detail plus string course at gutter level on front and rear facades including dentillation and nailhead mouldings. Same brickwork detail on each gable forming broken pediment. Pair of two storey canted window bays on rear garden facade with moulded stone surrounds to plain sash windows and slate hipped roofs.Six panelled door between bays with moulded stone surround and steps. Above at first floor level, stone framed 6 leaded light window with mullions and transoms. Single storey, flat roofed, brick/stone, square window bay added later adjacent to rear doorway. Venetian window with stone surround to each shaped gable, flanked by pair of chimney stacks. ‘EL’ monogram and ‘1876’ datestone carved onto stonework head of Venetian windows. Stone copings and circular vents to shaped brick gables. A number of original sash windows altered and new windows added. Clay ridge tiles to double pitched slate roof. Pair of side wall brick chimney stacks at each gable with brick relief patterning and buff ‘louvre’ pots of varying size. Roof windows added. Brick and stone walls plus brick piers with stone caps to parts of boundary. Boundary wall enclosing former side yard area now rendered and painted.
