Stowe House: 6 Maxtoke Road

Detached house c1870, possibly by architect T.C. Hine. Previously converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attic storey. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled roof. Building currently being refurbished/ converted. Original single storey extension with hipped slate roof in former yard area adjacent to north facing facade, now extended. Flat roofed garage building added mid 20c adjacent to extension. Also on Clumber Road West, small altered single storey extension with later lean-to roof. Panelled main entrance door with plain overlight in round arched brick opening facing Maxtoke Road. Two storey canted door/window bay with steps on garden front. Elsewhere, mainly single window openings apart from pair with brick shaft mullion facing Clumber Road West. Later doorway with steps added on garden front plus new window openings with lightwells to basement. Segment arched heads to window openings generally with plain or moulded red brick voussoirs and stone sills, plus brick shaft detail at reveals to windows on entrance and garden fronts. Round arched brick opening with side shafts to original main door opening. Also blue brick banding at plinth level and decorative, lozenge patterned brick banding at storey height level. Moulded brick detail with dentillation at eaves and gable verges. Inset brick panels on lower chimney stacks. To right of main entrance, splayed brick corner with moulded corbel at first floor level. Plain stone sills with moulded brick subsills to window openings. A number of stone sills now painted. Hipped and gabled roof with gabled dormer window plus later dormer facing Clumber Road West. All original red brick chimney stacks taken down above roof level, apart from one surviving base of original side wall stack facing Maxtoke Road. Mainly plain sash windows to original openings with some replacements and additions. Prominent brick and stone boundary wall enclosing garden adjacent to Maxtoke Road and Cavendish Road West with coursed rubble stone plinth, blue brick banding and red brick upper section with saddleback copings. Original brick/stone gate piers to main entrance with stone copings. Part coursed rubble stone, part red brick boundary wall with ashlar copings and later railings adjacent to Clumber Road West.
