Castlethorpe: Newcastle Circus

Detached house c1875, possibly by architect George Hine. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled roof. Garage added at bottom of garden adjacent to Clumber Crescent South, possibly by William Woodsend Ltd for Mr Riley c1937. Single storey extension added to west facing facade. Late 19c full height, gabled extension to left side of road front with central chimney stack plus added canted bay window bay adjacent to main entrance on east facade. Conservatory added, late 20c. Large two storey canted window bay overlooking garden. Decorative red and blue brick banding at eaves, first floor level and gable verges plus string courses and segmental and pointed arched openings with hoodmoulds. Part of brickwork has been rendered and painted. Stonework details include moulded surround to main entrance door, lintels and sills, sill bands, shafts with floriated capitals to main entrance door and bay windows plus small circular window surrounds with quatrefoil motif. Stonework now painted. Slate roof with prominent gables and gabled dormers with hips to side and garden bays. Iron finial to roof of large canted bay. Flat roofed dormers and other roof windows added. Red brick chimney stacks with red and blue brick band and string courses. Moulded stone with corbelled and banded brick details plus inset panels to gable chimney stack on road front. Crown pots. One stack taken down to just above gutter level. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Originally, plain sash windows. Now some alterations and additions to doors and windows. Later and enlarged openings in panelled red brick boundary wall adjacent to Newcastle Circus. Red brick garden wall adjacent to Clumber Crescent South with blue brick banding, saddleback copings and coursed, rubble stone plinth.
