Newcastle Court : Newcastle Circus

Large detached house c1875, formerly known as ‘The Elms’. Possibly by architect Hine & Son. Now considerably enlarged and converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics with detached coach house. Red brick with ashlar dressings and gabled slate roof. Single storey coach house with loft space. Red brick with gabled slate roof and ornamental bargeboards. Two larger later extensions on each side of original house have considerably altered form and character of the building. Earlier extension, to left side on garden front, late 19c/early 20c, is three storey gabled wing with canted window bay. Two storey. ‘L’ shaped, flat roofed later extension c1929-30 built against original entrance front of house with canted porch and window bay plus balustrading. This extension and other alterations were possibly carried out for Jesse Hind. Detached coach house converted into separate dwelling with single storey flat roofed garage extension added adjacent to Duke William Mount. Also, 20c extensions at rear of original house plus a row of garages built at bottom of garden facing Maxtoke Road. Pair of two storey flat roofed, canted window bays on front of original house with ashlar dressings. One bay has been altered. Gable above each bay, with Venetian window opening and stone surround. Alterations to openings in central section between bays. Main entrance doorway and window bay on original entrance front, now replaced by later extension. Gabled roof of original house on entrance front survives above flat roof of later extension. Slate roofs, now altered and extended. Original and later ridge and side wall chimney stacks. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Combination of sash and later casement windows, some with leaded glazing plus a number of alterations and additions. Large garden enclosed at road boundaries with coursed rubble stone plinth wall, topped by red brick garden wall and blue brick copings. Alterations to main gated entrance plus later gate openings. Part of brick wall at main entrance gate now rendered and painted.
