1 Cavendish Crescent North

Detached house c1870-75. Also known as Carisbrooke House. Built as one of a pair (with No.3 Cavendish Crescent North) of similarly styled houses. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Main part of house overlooking garden is of same form and size as No.3 Cavendish Lodge, with addition of two storey wing adjacent to Cavendish Crescent North. Originally red brick with stone dressings and hipped slate roof. Now completely rendered, painted and re-roofed. Original former carriage house outbuilding now converted for garage use. Large glasshouse originally adjacent to house, combined with similar glass building used by No.3, now demolished. Single storey flat roofed bow window bay adjacent to main entrance doorway and pair of two storey window bays overlooking garden. Originally (?), decorative blue brick band course at storey height level on facades with pattern of brick stretchers above and below alternating headers. Semicircular arched head to main entrance doorway with (originally?), alternating groups of polychromatic voussoirs. Variety of stonework features including chamfered reveals to window surrounds, round arched heads to door and window openings with hoodmoulds, shafts with floriated capitals plus string courses, copings, plinths and garden steps from right hand canted bay. Stonework now painted. Hipped roof with overhanging eaves. Roof recently re-slated. Original red brick chimney stacks with stone plinths, string courses and caps now rendered and much altered. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Numerous roof windows added. Sash windows generally, a number with glazing bars. Some alterations and additions. Original red brick piers to gated entrance on Cavendish Crescent North with stone plinths and caps, now rendered and painted. New pedestrian gate added. Brick boundary wall with coursed rubble stone plinth adjacent to North Road and Clumber Crescent North.
