9 Newcastle Drive

Detached house c1885-95, possibly by architects Hine & Son.Now converted into flats. House located at top of steeply sloping site with, originally, terraced garden areas down to Tennis Drive, (formerly known as Huntingdon Drive). Substantial part of lower garden area separately developed for ‘townhouses’ c1967-68. Red brick facades with ashlar dressings and plain tile gabled roof.Various alterations and additions. Two storey flat-roofed brick extension on road front c1966-67, including access steps, open entrance porch with bathroom/toilet above. Single storey flat roofed extension to basement on main front overlooking garden, creating balcony in front of enlarged former window opening above. Originally, glasshouse in same position as balcony extension. A number of original door and window openings enlarged or altered with additional openings formed. Projecting gabled wing to road front and shallow rectangular bay facing garden with gabled dormer above. Oriel window with lead roof on side facade. Red brick facades with eaves string course plus prominent band course with inset brick panels. Shaped brickwork surrounds to some window openings and pair of terracotta eight pointed star vents on gable to road front. Stone surrounds and sills to a number of window openings including prominent Venetian window on road front. Some of the stonework has now been painted. Plain tile roof with overhanging eaves, now partly altered, with large gables on road front and sides. Painted bargeboards to gables and gabled dormer. Clay ridge tiles. Upper part of red brick chimney stacks, including caps and pots, now removed. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added to service flats etc. Flat roofed dormer window added to roof overlooking garden. Originally, plain and glazing bar sash windows. Now numerous replacements, alterations and additions. Also, alterations and additions to door openings. Forecourt area adjacent to Newcastle Drive altered to provide access for car parking. Original boundary wall and railings removed and later railings added.
