19 Newcastle Drive

Substantial house, 1886, now converted into flats. Located at the top of steeply sloping site with, originally, terraced garden leading down to Tennis Drive, (formerly known as Huntingdon Drive). Part of original garden lost to separate late 20c residential development of three ‘town houses’. Three storey original house including attic storey plus basement. Red brick facades with ashlar dressings and hipped plain tile roof with shaped gables. Early 20c extensions abut west facade. Originally, 2no. large glasshouses adjacent to house. Stone retaining walls to paved garden terraces. Main entrance at ground floor level on Newcastle Drive. Oriel window bay at first floor level on road front with shaped gable above. Pair of full height, canted window bays overlooking garden with shaped gable above one bay. Variety of brickwork and terracotta details including voussoirs, corbels, beading and dentillation with moulded reveals at eaves, string courses and window surrounds etc. Many ornamental brick details are combined with stone features. Lower part of road front recently rendered and painted. Panelled main entrance door with moulded stone surround, including half round arched opening flanked by pilasters with keystone and cornice plus datestone between scroll brackets. Other stonework details include string courses, window sills and pediments plus gable copings, finials and chimney stack caps. Stonework, to main entrance doorway now painted. Tall, red brick chimney stacks with corbelled and moulded brick and stone caps. Original buff chimney pots with some replacements. Original c.i. rainwater fittings replaced with pipework added following conversion of building into flats. Mainly plain sash windows. Leaded lights to round headed staircase windows. Dormer windows and fire escape platform with ladder. A number of window alterations and additions. Wrought iron railings to ground floor arched openings and balcony facing garden. Red brick boundary wall to Newcastle Drive.
