3 Cavendish Crescent North

Detached house c1870-75. One of a pair (with No.1 Cavendish Crescent North) of similarly styled houses. Also known as Cavendish Lodge. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with stone dressings and hipped slate roof. A number of alterations and additions including first floor pitched roof extension on road front over original single storey extension in former yard area, plus conversion of original carriage house outbuilding into garage. Large glasshouse originally adjacent to house, combined with similar glass building used by No.1, now demolished. Later glazed porch to rear entrance. Plan by Bromley, Cartwright and Waumsley for alterations to house for Alan Wright c1933. Single storey flat roofed bow window bay adjacent to main entrance doorway and two storey canted and rectangular window bays overlooking garden. Decorative blue brick band course at storey height level with pattern of brick stretchers above and below alternating headers. Semicircular arched head to main entrance doorway with polychromatic voussoirs. Variety of stonework details including chamfered reveals to window surrounds, arched heads with hoodmoulds, shafts with floriated capitals to main entrance doorway and bow window bay plus string courses, copings, plinth stretchers and steps. Hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves and clay ridge and hip tiles. Red brick chimney stacks with stone plinths, string courses and moulded caps. Buff crown chimney pots. Flat roofed dormer window and other roof windows added. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Sash windows generally, a number with glazing bars. Panelled main entrance door. Original red brick boundary wall on road front with coursed rubble stone plinth, blue/black brick patterning and half round copings, some of which have been replaced. Gated opening with original brick piers, stone plinths and moulded caps plus name and number panels. Also rear entrance gateway with stone surround and segmental arched head. Brick and stone garden wall adjacent to Clumber Crescent North.
