29 Newcastle Drive

Detached house c1859 by architect T.C. Hine. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick facades with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roof. House located on upper part of steeply sloping site with road front built tight up against back of pavement. Original carriage house and stable buildings at lower part of garden adjacent to Tennis Drive, (formerly known as Huntingdon Drive), now converted and extended to form two separate dwellings. House originally half size of present building with conservatory abutting west facade adjacent to boundary with 31 Newcastle Drive. Plans prepared by Leslie Harris c1921 for conversion of side conservatory area into garage for Harold Greenhalgh. Large extension, doubling size of house, added soon after original house was completed c1860-80 plus further additions and alterations (late 19c / 20c) including pedimented brick porch with round arched doorways. Part of small outbuilding to 27 Newcastle Drive converted for use as part of flat in no.29. Red brick facades with decorative brick and stone eaves, sill and plinth banding. Some areas of facing brickwork have been rendered. Prominent pair of shaped gabled dormers on front and rear facades with Venetian styled window openings. Moulded stone details include cornices, string courses, door and window surrounds plus parapets, copings, finials and chimney stack caps. Stonework now painted. Hipped slate roofs with clay ridge and hip tiles. Red brick chimney stack with stone dressings. Original buff ‘Bishop’ pots replaced. Original rainwater fittings replaced. Mainly plain sash windows with a number of casement replacements and other alterations. Dormer window added. Moulded stone doorway with semicircular arched head from basement into garden with half glazed panelled door.
