7 Cavendish Crescent North
Detached house c1880-82, possibly by John Loverseed with architects Hine & Evans. In single household use. Plan by Swann & Wright for garage building for Henry Holliwell c1920-30, adjacent to former original single storey outbuilding which was later demolished c1985. Two storeys with cellars. Pair of single storey, flat roofed canted window bays overlooking garden, either side of flat roofed glazed bay which replaced original door/window in that position (c1948). Later door opening formed c1985 on side facade to create external access to and from existing kitchen. Red brick facades with unpainted stone details at openings. Variety of brick decorative features including alternating bull nose bracket detail at eaves and gable verges; blue brick band courses and patterning plus splay reveals to window openings. Unpainted stone details include shaped lintels and plain sills to window openings, kneelers at gables plus capping to brick plinth at base of facades. More extensive stonework detailing to large staircase/hall window and to main entrance doorway including mullions and transoms, circular framed overlights plus shaft pilasters flanking main entrance door. Slate, double pitched roofs with hips and prominent pair of gables facing garden and road. Side gables plus small gablet between gables overlooking garden. Clay ridge tiles with lead valleys and flashings. Red brick chimney stacks with vertical indentation, string courses and corbelled cap. Buff ‘crown’ chimney pots. One stack removed and one rebuilt with some changes in detail. A number of original rainwater fittings have been replaced. Sash windows generally, some with single glazing bars. Leaded lights to main entrance. Large nine panelled main entrance door. Original brick and stone boundary wall and gate piers to Cavendish Crescent North. Other gate piers were removed during later addition of garage building and widening of opening to form car access. Stepped garden area. Terrace and balustraded garden retaining wall added late 20c. Original garden retaining wall adjacent to Cumber Crescent North.
