9 Cavendish Crescent North

Large detached house c1875 by architect T.C. Hine. Also known as Peveril House and Peveril Tower. House and attached gateway Grade II Listed. In single household use. Large part of lower garden area adjacent to Alexander Road developed for separate residential use c1970-80, replacing original coach house. Also single storey flat roofed later extension to road front. Original red brick house with stone/stucco dressings now roughcast rendered and painted. Hipped slate roof. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Entrance front has central projecting porch with round arched doorway and fanlight flanked by Ionic pilasters and topped by entablature. Later bay added each side of porch with round arched windows and moulded surrounds. Above 4 similar windows flanked by external stacks with similar windows beyond. Single flat headed window at attic level in each of chimney stacks. Three storey canted window bay to left side of garden front topped by octagonal tower with hipped roof. Round headed sash windows on ground floor of canted bay with flat headed plain sashes at first and second floors. Round headed openings, divided by Ionic pilasters, to originally open tower with balcony. Tower openings and balustrading now infilled with windows etc. Round headed windows to recessed centre on garden front with single sash window at ground and first floor. To right, projecting wing with pair of round headed sashes at ground floor level and pair of flat headed plain sashes above. Slightly off- centre projecting bay on south front with20c conservatory at ground floor and triple sash above. Above again, pedimented gable dormer with smaller tripartite sash. Also on south front, external stack plus round and flat headed single sash window openings. Projecting two storey wing on road front, central chimney stack, single sash window openings and pedimented gable dormer. Blue brick plinth to facades, ground floor moulded impost band, moulded first floor band and sill band plus coved eaves. Hipped slate roofs with ridge and side wall stacks. Corniced stacks on entrance front, plainer elsewhere with corbelled brick caps. Buff crown pots. Rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Original brick/stone boundary wall now rendered with additional openings. Original gateway to main entrance with square piers, now rendered, chamfered plinth, cornice caps and ball finials. Renewed wrought iron gates.
