10 Cavendish Crescent North

Built c.1880-1890 the house, which has now been converted into two flats, is one half of a prominent building overlooking the ‘Bowl’ of the park. The building is located on steeply sloping ground with two principal storeys above ground facing Cavendish Crescent North and three main storeys facing the garden at the rear. Formerly named ‘Charnwood’ the external appearance of the original house matched its neighbour at no.12. Red brick facades in reasonable condition with corbelled and moulded brick / terracotta detail at gable verges, with stone dressings, plus string courses and segmental or triangular pediments over door and window openings.  Moulded brick and terracotta features including sawtooth and diamond faced beading patterns. Decorative brick tile tablets feature between head of doors or windows and pediments above. An assortment of gabled and hipped slate roofs with corbelled and moulded brick eaves. The chimney stacks have been partially taken down and original rainwater fittings have been replaced with plastic. Typical Victorian fusion of varying architectural styles. Stone lintels, sills and surrounds to door and window openings, now painted, with a single stone string course at first floor level on the garden façade, also painted. Prominent three storey rectangular window bay and two storey rectangular corner bay on rear facade. Some weather damage to string courses. Many of the original vertical sliding sash windows remain although there have been some removals, replacements and partial infilling of original openings. Prominent leaded light glazing to large staircase window on front facade. Substantial part of split level garden was lost to a separate residential development c1970. Original brick retaining wall forming the boundary with Ellington House remains and a hedged fence separates the garden from No.12 Cavendish Crescent North. Original brick boundary wall and gate piers adjacent to Cavendish Crescent North survive. Despite a number of changes including the loss of garden area, the alteration of some door and window openings and the partial removal of chimney stacks etc., the external character of the building remains substantially intact with no extensions.
