11 Cavendish Crescent North
This large detached house c1890–95, formerly named ‘Gleadthorpe’, remains in single household use. Plain red brick walls with minimal decorative features apart from plain brick string courses and brick / terracotta moulded cornice type feature. Complex juxtaposition of slate gabled and hipped roofs and gabled dormers. Plain clay ridge tiles. Projecting painted barge boards, mainly plain, except over main entrance bay where arched braces have been introduced above and below tie beam. Corbelled brick chimney stacks with brick relief patterning generally intact but a number of original pots are missing or have been replaced. Velux type roof windows added. Mainly unpainted plain stone door and window surrounds but incorporating stone mullions and transomes in prominent large window openings on the road facing facade and at the main entrance doorway. A variety of window types, predominantly casement but with a number of replacements, including upvc type on the front facade. A number of windows have leaded, lattice panes. Prominent bay windows with flat roofs, lattice pane casements and brick plinths on single storey projecting bay adjacent to Cavendish Crescent North. Two storey brick and stone rectangular and canted window bays on garden front plus later conservatory. Original rainwater fittings have been replaced with plastic and other downpipes have been added. No significant extensions or other alterations to the original house apart from small scale flat roofed utility outbuildings and a garage erected c1926 in front yard area. The original garden area remains intact. The original brick / stone boundary walls facing Cavendish Crescent North and Clumber Crescent North also survive but have been partially rendered or painted. Additional piers have also been added to the main entrance boundary wall. The well meaning but inappropriate rendering and painting remedial work to the boundary walls has adversely affected the character of the original house and has introduced an unsightly and conflicting visual feature in the streetscene.
