Park House: 14 Cavendish Cresecent North

This detached house c 1896, once again in single household use having previously been converted into flats c1959 is another exuberant example of the architect Watson Fothergill’s idiosyncratic work. Listed Grade II together with the gateway and brick boundary wall to Cavendish Crescent North. Red brick walls profusely decorated on the road facing facades with panels of floriated, dome beaded and diamond shaped terracotta and brick tiles inset within painted timber framing. Plain and moulded string courses, with dentilation developed to form triangular and segmented pediments over doors and windows on the plainer garden facing facade. Original single storey side extension. Two shallow bays at rear, one canted with flat roof. Shallow pointed bay on front facade. Unpainted stone surrounds to door and window openings on rear facade. Clay plain tile gabled roof with perforated clay ridge ties. Projecting plain painted barge boards to gables with ties. Arched braces added to barge boards on front facade with shaped wood supporting brackets. Projecting eaves generally with gabled dormer on side elevation. Sash windows predominantly on garden elevation with casements elsewhere. Many windows have leaded lattice panes. French doors to canted bay. Some replacement of c.i. rainwater fittings with plastic. Substantial part of the original garden adjacent to Tattershall Drive lost to separate residential development c1970. Flat roofed garage added and front brick boundary wall partially rebuilt c1959. Flat roofed rear extension added c1959 involving some internal alterations. Generally in good condition with little significant external change to the original house apart from the garage and rear flat roofed extension. The loss of part of the original garden for separate residential development has adversely affected the setting of the house from Tattershall Drive and has reduced the views from the residual garden area of the original house over the Park ‘Bowl’. Original brick boundary garden walls adjacent to nos. 12 and 16 remain.
