6 South Road
One of a pair of houses c1865-70 (with 9 Park Drive), possibly by architects Hine & Son. Now converted into three flats, possibly by George Hardy c1933. Also, plan for garage by George Hardy c1934. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled slate roof. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Original single storey front wing with later opening onto Newcastle Circus. Alterations to original glazed entrance porch plus steel fire escape staircase added from altered gabled dormer window into former yard area adjacent to Newcastle Circus. Garage building added, breaching original boundary wall at the bottom of the garden on Clumber Crescent South. Originally, large glasshouse between the houses, facing the garden. Single storey bow window bay adjacent to main entrance. Two storey flat roofed canted window bay and three storey rectangular window bay with shaped gable overlooking the garden. Corbelled bull nose brick detail at eaves and gable verges. Nailhead moulding detail added to eaves. Corbelled brick band course at first floor level with sawtooth detail. Stonework features include moulded door and window surrounds generally with straight or round arched heads plus pointed arch opening with side shafts to main entrance doorway. Also, moulded cornices, chamfered reveals, hoodmoulds, bosses, plinths, steps plus kneelers and copings to gables. Slate roof with gables and gabled dormers. Clay ridge and hip tiles. Flat roofed dormer window added. 4no. red brick chimney stacks. Three of the stacks have been partially rebuilt. Brick relief patterning with corbelled cap to remaining original stack. A combination of plain and glazing bar sash windows with some alterations. Decorative leaded light panels in bow window bay to staircase. Half glazed, panelled external main entrance door to porch. Original window openings at attic level overlooking the garden altered and large casement windows added. Also later doors to bay on garden front. Red brick boundary wall with coursed rubble stone plinth enclosing garden adjacent to South Road and Clumber Crescent South. Blue brick plinth stretchers and band course with saddleback copings to garden wall, now partly rendered. Coursed rubble stone plinth and gable to entrance porch. Enlarged later opening to brick boundary wall adjacent to Newcastle Circus.
