Ellington House: Tattershall Drive
The house with its ancillary buildings built c 1879, is located in deeply excavated ground between widely differing levels on Cavendish Crescent North and Tattershall Drive. The main access is from Tattershall Drive with rear garden access via steps from Cavendish Crescent North. Apart from a small recent extension between the main house and the high
retaining wall to Cavendish Crescent North, plus a number of door and window alterations to the ancillary buildings, the external appearance of the original house remains more or less intact. Part of the washroom outbuilding was converted for garage use c1950. The architectural style and materials used in the washroom / garage outbuilding are linked to Carnoustie Lodge and possibly 1 and 2 Albury Square. Natural slate roofs with clay hip tiles, brick corbelled eaves and prominent dentil course. Some of the original gutters and downpipes have been replaced with black plastic. The building has plain red brick walls with stone dressings to door and window openings including shaped lintels at first floor level and Gothic style hood moulds and shaft mullions to some ground floor openings. A pair of single storey canted brick and stone window bays face the rear garden area with a single storey rectangular window bay on the main entrance facade. A blue brick string course caps a projecting brick plinth at the base of the main facades. Much of the stonework remains unpainted apart from some lintels and sills on the ancillary buildings. The majority of the original sash windows remain although there have been
non-matching replacements and some new openings formed. A substantial part of the original garden area has been lost to the development of an additional dwelling c1970. The original brick boundary wall facing Cavendish Crescent North is in need of repair. Rendering has been applied to try and conceal the problem but this together with an unkempt redundant access point into the house at first floor level has only increased the unsightly effect on the streetscape. The former brick boundary wall to Tattershall Drive has been rebuilt on the original stone plinth. The original brick garden wall between Ellington House and Carnoustie Lodge remains.
