6 The Ropewalk

One of a pair of houses c1830-40. Converted into offices and now flats. Painted stucco with gabled slate roof. Three storeys plus basement and attic. Originally, glazed passageway from pedimented doorway on The Ropewalk to main entrance at side of building. Glazed canopy now removed. Three storeys and basement to road front with single storey square entrance porch, steps and canted window bay. Three glazing bar sash windows to bay and glazing bar sash window either side of entrance porch. Sill band above. 4 windows range on each of upper floors. Moulded window surrounds to main openings with cornices to ground floor windows. Moulded cornice to each bay. Moulded eaves cornice with shaped modillion brackets. Three storey garden front with two storey canted window bay. Glazing bar sash windows to bay with later door opening. Graduated window openings on garden front with 2no. glazing bar sashes on each floor. Originally, small sash window above bay roof, now replaced by enlarged door/window opening to create access to bay roof (with added railings) for amenity purposes. Moulded surrounds to original windows with cornices on shaped brackets to ground floor windows. Sill band at first floor level. Eaves cornice with shaped modillion brackets. Prominent pedimented gable to side elevation with same cornice/modillion detail. Round arched main entrance doorway on side elevation with moulded surrounds. Sill band at first floor level with, originally, single sash window at each floor level above. Additional windows added to side elevation during 20c and 21c alterations. Gabled slate roof with twin side wall and central chimney stacks, now much altered. Originally, single rooflight over internal staircase, now numerous roof windows added. Original brick boundary wall adjacent to The Ropewalk now substantially altered with railings added. Lower part of original terraced garden area with stone retaining wall and balustrading, now used for car parking. Patterned brick boundary wall to Newcastle Terrace. Newcastle Terrace, popular early 19c promenade for Town inhabitants with distant views over undeveloped Park and across Trent valley, significantly reduced in width c1980 following rebuilding works to retaining wall on Newcastle Drive.
