10 The Ropewalk

One of a pair of house c1830-40. (Nos. 10 and 12) Now converted into shared offices. Painted stucco with hipped slate roof and central chimney stack, now altered. Three storey entrance front facing garden, symmetrical arrangement (with No.10) of doors and windows. Glazing bar sash window on ground floor and main entrance doorway. Pair of glazing bar sash windows at first and second floor levels. Moulded surrounds to openings, with cornices on brackets to first floor window openings. Moulded sill band at first floor level. Full height pilasters between openings with panel added to pilasters at ground storey level. Modillion brackets with plain band in shallow relief at overhanging eaves. Symmetrical road front, three storeys plus basement, with pair of glazing bar sashes at first and second floor levels. Glazing bar sash window at ground floor level adjacent to round arched later doorway and bracketed canopy. Alterations at basement level. Moulded surrounds to window openings. Modillion brackets to overhanging eaves with same eaves detail on side elevations. Originally, centrally positioned gated opening with piers in former boundary wall adjacent to The Ropewalk plus steps down to basement yard area. Now much altered and 20c railings added. Original brick boundary wall to Newcastle Terrace but doorway with piers now bricked up. Lower part of formar terraced garden area now used for car parking. Newcastle Terrace, popular early 19c promenade for Town inhabitants with distant views over undeveloped Park and across Trent valley, significantly reduced in width c1980 during rebuilding works to retaining wall on Newcastle Drive.
