14 The Ropewalk

Detached house c1830-40. Much altered. Now converted into flats. Painted stucco with slate roof, coped gables and side wall chimney stacks. Two storeys plus basement and attic. 19c and 20c two storey side extensions plus single storey additions to road front. Symmetrical arrangement of openings on original road facing facade with later central doorway and steps, flanked on the left with glazing bar sash window. Original window opening to right of doorway now replaced with flat roofed single storey extension. 3no. glazing bar sash windows at first floor level. Moulded surrounds to door and window openings with cornices to original openings at ground floor level. Alterations to original eaves cornice on road front and flat roofed dormer window and other roof windows added. To either side of original road front, full height extensions with single storey projections to pavement edge. Vehicle access to car parking in former garden area through right hand extension. Originally 2 openings at ground and first floor levels on garden front. Cornices to 2 original ground floor openings now removed and window openings enlarged. Pair of original window openings above at first floor level with glazing bar sashes, moulded surrounds and sill brackets. Later window opening formed between original openings at first floor level. Alterations at eaves. Full height extensions to each side of original garden front plus flat roofed dormer windows and other roof windows. Originally 4no. side wall chimney stacks, one stack now removed and others altered. Originally, road front boundary wall with 2no. gateways plus piers, now altered and railings added. Important feature on Newcastle Terrace is brick boundary wall to original gardens of properties on The Ropewalk. Some sections of the wall altered or in need of repair. Newcastle Terrace, popular early 19c promenade for Town inhabitants with distant views over undeveloped Park and across Trent valley, significantly reduced in width c1980 during rebuilding works to retaining wall on Newcastle Drive.
