17 Cavendish Crescent North

Semi-detached house, in single household use, forming part of a matching pair, built c1885, with the front access to the house from Cavendish Crescent North and rear garden access from Clumber Crescent North. The original building envelope remains predominantly intact and in good condition with natural slate roof, plain clay ridge and hip tiles, lead valleys, brick corbelled chimney stacks and original buff fireclay crown chimney pots. New rooflights have recently been added. The red brick walls are relatively plain with moulded brick or decorative terracotta string courses at eaves and storey height levels plus stone door and window lintels, surrounds and sills which have been left unpainted. Two window bays facing the garden, two storey canted bay with a shallow pitched roof plus three storey rectangular bay forming a gable at roof level. Eaves and gable verges are corbelled brickwork. Original cast iron gutters and downpipes have been replaced with a black plastic type. The majority of original windows, which are predominantly vertical sliding sashes, remain and there are a small number of more recent replacement windows. The original glazed front passage route from Cavendish Crescent North remains with the partially rebuilt brick and moulded stone entrance doorway at the edge of the footpath. Externally, the property envelope has not changed significantly since the house was built apart from the replacement of the original front and rear boundary walls. A small recent extension has been added in the front yard area and a large garage has been built, in conjunction with the replacement of the original rear garden wall. The garage has a large white door which is obtrusive on the Clumber Crescent North street scene. The original brick and stone garden wall between No.17 and No.19 remains and a recent fence encloses the boundary with No.15.
