28 The Ropewalk
Detached house c1828-29. One of a group of houses on The Ropewalk which were amongst the first to be developed in The Park c1828-34. Formerly gardens, the site had prominent views over Nottingham Terrace, (now named Park Terrace) and across The Park. The 4th Duke of Newcastle had grand aesthetic aspirations for a select ‘residential plan’ in The Park and by identifying these plots and commencing building work he aggravated local feelings concerned with impending loss of The Park as an area of common recreational use. Building now converted for part residential and part commercial use. Three storeys plus basement. Painted stucco facades. Original house altered and extended including possible early additional storey plus full height road front wing. Part of extension or conversion work in road front yard area possibly undertaken in first half of 19c with 20c additions including part of former (carriage house?), now converted for garage use. Symmetrical garden front with flat roofed side wings. Pair of two storey canted window bays possibly added during the second half of the 19c. Moulded cornice and blocking course at possible original roof level with additional moulded cornice and blocking course to second floor storey. Moulded surrounds to window openings and moulded head and sill bands to canted window bays. Original chimney stacks partly taken down. Hipped slate roofs to main building and to outbuilding adjacent to The Ropewalk. Combination of glazing bar sash windows with a number of alterations and additions. Original garden area survives enclosed by boundary wall and central gateway with piers adjacent to Park Terrace. Original boundary wall adjacent to The Ropewalk partly removed and altered to allow vehicle access. Railings and enlarged gates added.
