36 and 36a The Ropewalk
One of a pair of houses c1831-34. (With No.38). Now converted into flats. Grade II Listed. Part of a group of houses on The Ropewalk which were amongst the first to be built in The Park c1828-34. Formerly gardens, the site had prominent views over Nottingham Terrace (now named Park Terrace) and across The Park. The 4th Duke of Newcastle had grand aesthetic aspirations for a select ‘residential plan’ in The Park and by identifying these plots and commencing building work he aggravated local feelings concerned at impending loss of The Park as an area of common recreational use. Three storeys plus basement. Painted stucco facades with artificial slate roofs. Mid 19c and late 20c alterations and additions. Rusticated lower floors to rear elevation facing The Ropewalk plus sill band, eaves cornice and blocking course. Moulded surrounds to original glazing bar sash windows at first and second floor level. Staircase plus single storey square and canted window bays added mid 19c with 20c rectangular bay at basement level. Outbuilding in yard area also altered and converted. Rusticated ground floor to main front facing Park Terrace with sill band, cornices, eaves cornice and blocking course. Three storey bow window bay with tripartite sash on ground and first floor level. Original second floor windows replaced. Side bay to left has renewed French window with hood and above, glazing bar sash with 20c wrought iron balcony. Above again, smaller glazing bar sash. Two side wall, coped chimney stacks, others altered. Car parking in yard area adjacent to The Ropewalk with 20c flat roofed garage building and alterations to boundary wall.
