40 The Ropewalk

Detached house c1829. Now converted into offices. One of a group of houses on The Ropewalk which were amongst the first to be built in The Park c1828-34. Formerly gardens, the site had prominent views over Nottingham Terrace (now named Park Terrace) and across The Park. The 4th Duke of Newcastle had grand aesthetic aspirations for a select ‘residential plan’ in The Park and by identifying these plots and commencing building work he aggravated local feelings concerned at impending loss of The Park as an area of common recreational use. Three storeys plus basement. Painted stucco with hipped slate roof and 4no. side wall chimney stacks with corniced caps and renewed pots. Three window range to each floor on main front facing Park Terrace. Two storey canted window bay added either side of central doorway, with flat roof and cornice. 3no. glazing bar sashes at each level on bays. Central doorway with overlight and above at first floor level, glazing bar sash with moulded surround, corniced head and wrought iron balcony on brackets. 3no. glazing bar sash windows with moulded surrounds at first floor level and above, overhanging eaves with modillion brackets and plain band in shallow relief. Symmetrical elevation to The Ropewalk with three glazing bar sash windows to first and second floors. Overhanging eaves, modillion brackets and plain band above. Central panelled door with moulded surround and segmental pediment. To left of doorway, single storey canted window bay added late 19c / early20c. To the right, glazing bar sash window with moulded surround. Plinth at base of facades. Single storey 19c wing in former garden area adjacent to The Ropewalk. Wing added in stages replacing earlier outbuilding. Original boundary wall and gates to The Ropewalk now replaced with railings. Rebuilt brick boundary walls adjacent to Park Terrace.
