56 The Ropewalk

Detached house c1850. Now converted into offices. Adjacent to a group of houses on The Ropewalk which were amongst the first to be built in The Park c1828-34. Formerly gardens, the site had prominent views over Nottingham Terrace, (now named Park Terrace), and across the Park. The 4th Duke of Newcastle had grand aesthetic aspirations for a select ‘residential plan’ in The Park and by identifying these plots and commencing building work he aggravated Town inhabitants who were becoming increasingly concerned at impending loss of The Park as an area of common recreational use. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Painted stucco with gabled plain tile roof. Rusticated basement storey on road front with symmetrical arrangement of 3no. glazing bar sash windows on each floor. Moulded surrounds to ground and first floor windows. Later doorway added in basement storey. Eaves cornice with plain band in shallow relief and blocking course. Rusticated plinth on garden front with symmetrical arrangement of 3no. glazing bar sash windows with moulded surrounds to ground and first floors. Later window openings in plinth. Eaves cornice with plain band and blocking course. Previous canopy/ verandah abutting garden front, now removed. Gabled side elevations with glazing bar sashes and moulded surrounds to upper floors. Fire escape doorway and staircase added to west facade. Entrance porch to east facade. Cornice returns on side elevations. Coped gables flanked by side wall chimney stacks. Stacks now reduced and altered. Original boundary wall enclosing small yard area adjacent to The Ropewalk removed to create open forecourt for car parking. Original garden area adjacent to Park Terrace now converted for car parking with enlarged central gated opening in rendered boundary wall to Park Terrace.
